Lay It on the Line for the Freedom to Vote

We all know the last week was tumultuous. One fantastic thing about this crazy week was More Perfect Democracy's 2022 Kickoff. Thank you to all who signed up or came to the event. That's the first step to taking action on a daily basis to help make this country the nation it hasn't ever been, but must become. I'm proud to call you my colleagues, and I hope even more of you focus on creating, curating, and circulating winning content to your networks on and off the internet.

Come back and see us: Every Thursday at 2pm ET, we'll host a Messaging Office Hour where we can talk about messaging, tips and tricks, and what to focus on for the next week. At least one week per month we'll have someone visit and give a presentation. We'll keep you up to date. Here's the link to join.

Focus on Freedom to Vote: Tomorrow marks Martin Luther King, Jr's Birthday. The King family has asked that those who do not work toward cementing voting rights not celebrate his birthday. Below are two pieces of content you can use to discuss King and voting rights, with the hashtags #BeAHeroForVotingRights or #DeliverForVotingRights or #WeDreamOfVotingRights.

Create Content: Let's Do This Together! More Perfect Democracy will be having a Meme Party where we create messages and memes on Zoom together every Tuesday at 2pm ET. Join us if you want to help shape the message or make some graphics. You don't need to be a professional to create content. Feel free to invite your friends. Here's the link to join.

Circulate Content:

  1. Post one of the pieces of content above calling on Senators to pass #FreedomToVoteAct. (Click on the image to enlarge, then right click/double finger click to "save image as"). Everything you see here is free and open source.

  2. Commit to stop refuting Republican messaging with their own words. It’s time to flip the conversation to our own ground and to start talking about Dems delivering or Rs criming.

  3. Say what we're for! As we use social media, let's refrain from talking more about what we're against rather than what we stand for! If you need to, rearrange your sentence so your first discuss what we stand FOR.

Curate Content: As you find quality content online, please post it in our slack or DM it to me in Twitter (@moreperfectdem1). If you're not yet a member of our slack, email me at or DM me in Twitter and I'll get you an invitation. If you're a member of the Twitter DM rooms, please share it in there so we can all amplify.

Bottom Line: It’s GO-time. Midterms are in 11 months, and together we can help Dems win more elections at every level. We have succeeded before, and we can do it again if we work together.

Watch, Listen, Read, and Follow

Watch: Angus King, Independent Senator from Maine, discusses the reason he supports ending the filibuster for voting rights.

Listen: Listen to the podcast In the Bubble with Andy Slavitt to learn about how to keep your family safre from Covid. This is one of my never-miss podcasts.

Read: The MLK Day Messaging Strategy and the Social Media Toolkit from The Movement Briefing (Jiggy Geronimo, Anat Shenker-Osorio, and Mike Podhozer).

Read: Chop Wood, Carry Water. This newsletter is designed to give readers about 5-7 minutes of actions to take each weekday. They get call scripts for your federal representatives, an “Extra Credit” item, a Resistbot script, and something election-related as well. Because electing more progressives up and down the ballot is how we get out of the mess we’re in.
